1. Are bioplastics edible?

2. Do bioplastics decompose in the open, after having been „disposed of behind a bush“, for example?

3. Is there any danger of bioplastics already starting to decay with the first contact of water?

4. How long can compostable garbage bags be stored before they tear apart?

1. Are bioplastics edible?

Even though bioplastics are compostable they are not comestible because the body cannot digest them.

2. Do bioplastics decompose in the open, after having been „disposed of behind a bush“, for example?

To start decomposing compostable bioplastics need a humid and warm environment as well as microorganisms. As these factors are not given in the open the bioplastics would pollute the environment. A waste disposal via bio bin or even Green Dot or residual waste bin is far more responsible.

3. Is there any danger of bioplastics already starting to decay with the first contact of water?

In order to start decomposition bioplastics need several factors: high temperatures, a minimum of humidity and microorganisms. So the contact with water at a normal temperature is not enough to decompose the bioplastics.

4. How long can compostable garbage bags be stored before they tear apart?

Compostable bioplastics are designed for only decomposing under optimal composting conditions. The use in a household does not restrict the normal application of the bags. Even higher temperatures or air moisture in the kitchen do not cause any damage to appropriately used bags.
